The national charity’s network of over 6,500 volunteers has a simple mission: to take out old people on Sunday afternoons and give them tea. “Six or eight guests will be taken to another person’s house,” explains Contact the Elderly’s director, Keith Arscott. “They’re reminded of the teas they had in their youth. They make new friends, start phoning each other and get help with their shopping.” The experience has left Irene feeling “like a new person”.
