Almost to a man, the Americans believed that choosing how to vote was a matter of complete free will. The population would look at the policies, look at the candidates – and decide which were in their interests to support. Apart from a very small liberal elite who have discovered bourgeois self-flagellation, the American electorate is not burdened by historical class guilt. Virtually everybody either is himself, or is descended from, somebody who chose to go there. (Except for those who were taken there in chains – and it is, significantly, their descendants who have had most difficulty identifying with the American dream.) But here, and in Europe as a whole, we live among all the people who did not go: for whom feudal relationships and resentments are not dead.
