The wooden catch, a simple wooden block that turns to open and close, has dried out so much that it has no purchase on the wooden door frame at all. When five hens lean on the door it swings open and they're off: like prisoners of war from Colditz they head for the borders and deep shade. By the time I notice the swinging open door, they are happy to be lured back in by a rattling sound of corn. They all settle back in base camp.
