Finally, on 10 May, I was threatened with arrest as a hostage; with the help of a Prussian passport I fled and went to Bonnières [north-west of Paris] to spend the worst days there. Today I’m living quietly in Batignolles, as though waking from a bad dream. My pavilion is the same, my garden hasn’t moved, not a single piece of furniture or plant has suffered, and I could almost believe that the two sieges were bad jokes invented to frighten the children.
