(My local town replaced the ironmonger with a collection of boutiques and giftshops years ago.) "Who," I asked the man behind the counter, "is in charge of planting roundabouts in this town?" He knew exactly who to contact and wrote down the name and number for me. But the roundabout coordinator was on holiday and then I lost her details. So I had to ring the ironmonger, who was not at all bothered by providing the information again – and added that everyone in the town thought the roundabouts were terrific and he hoped I would write about them.
