Now, as others have pointed out, even this claim can be disputed. But even IF you are granted this, it is irrelevant. We as a people can simply decide to legally separate unions from any religious context without giving a crap about what stupid thing was done in the past. If some particular religion wants to claim a particular rite associated with some union (call it marriage or what ever), nothing is stopping that. But, for the purpose of legal standing and associated benefits, unions must remain secular for the reasons you state. Once that is understood, the state (government) is then constitutionally prohibited from passing any union (or "marriage") laws that are based in ANY WAY on any any particular religion.
