Re: | Estrela Mountain Dog Breeder Wanted | Ad: | I have a small farm in Cape Breton and raise sheep, cattle, poultry and occasionally a few pigs. I also have our own line of cross bred flock guardians. They are Maremma/Pyrenees cross. I have only bred them every 5-6 years I needed replacement dogs. I keep the female I want for here functionality as an LGD and seek out appropriate males of good temperament and abilities with livestock. I like to have overlapping generations and have 6 dogs of 3 generations at the moment. Yes, I know it's too many for this farm but I love the dogs. The oldest dog here is the grandmother of the litter from the spring of 2019 and she's 13 years old. I'm becoming more interested in purebred dogs which was less possible when I started out farming quite a few years back. There weren't many LGD breeds available here in Nova Scotia back then, so I crossed a female Pyr with a long lived male working Maremma and had an excellent litter of 10 of which only 1 didn't pass LGD school, so went to a more domestic residence. The others went to farms in various parts of Cape Breton, mainland NS and one to PEI. Every 5 years I breed the current female of the right age and keep what dogs I need/want and the puppies have tended to go to people who have had dogs from this farm before.
At any rate, I've attended a webinar series for the past couple of months based in Portugal, and I've fallen in love with a couple of Portuguese working breeds; the Estrela Mountain Dog and the Transmontano Mastiff. |
