We also have a 8yr old daughter so a puppy or younger dog who can grow up with her is ideal. I am aware as well that these little guys can cost a pretty penny but I know if I keep looking there is a dog out there somewhere with a owner who is more concerned with finding a good home rather than lineing their pockets.
