We sow our seeds in May under cool glass in modular six by four trays, one or two seeds per module. Ours are planted out once the fibrous roots have filled the module, but before the taproot develops. You can sow seeds directly into the ground in May, about half an inch deep in rows a foot apart, but we never have enough space then. One 6ft x 4ft (2m x 1m) bed will accommodate about 28 plants, which is plenty for us.
