These photographs, dating from 1937 and 1938, were taken as the shadows of another cataclysm were ineluctably gathering over France, and it doesn’t take much imagination to see in these bright-eyed faces the future heroes of the Maquis and the resistance, many of whom would soon be dead or prisoners of the Nazis. Nothing else in Les Rencontres Arles tugs at the heart-strings quite so acutely as that thought attached to these images.
