On December 1 they passed through the gate, but the guard recalled them on the ground that their passes were incorrectly signed. Since the guard failed to appreciate that this was an escape attempt, the party returned to the camp to prepare a second attempt. They tried this a fortnight later, but a more observant guard detected an irregularity, and Tunstall endured another period in solitary. He was transferred to Colditz Castle on March 15 1942.
