We experienced their full splendour the next day, when we hiked the 11-mile James Irvine and Miners’ Ridge loop, a short drive from our cabin and described as one of the finest redwood walks. And it started with a bang: a forest filled with majestic redwoods. A fallen tree offered some sense of its magnitude: the diameter was the size of a bus. We stepped inside another – the trunk had been naturally hollowed out – and it was larger than the living rooms of most London flats. After several attempts, we decided photographs didn’t do them justice – for a start, we couldn’t fit the whole tree into the frame. The only way to really appreciate them, in fact, was to just stop and stare and try to take it all in.
