The solid waste residue collects in the bottom of the tank and has to be emptied occasionally (sometimes only every two or three years, or longer), while the excess liquid waste flows off the top of the tank into a soakaway or “leaching field”, where it undergoes aerobic decomposition while it soaks down into the ground. If your garden has sufficient space – and suitably well-drained soil – then this will be your “greenest” option.
