The film was first entitled Frenzy, then Kaleidoscope, which had a more zeitgeist feel. Set in New York, it was conceived as a grotesque love story, with William Cooper, an attractive, charming bodybuilder, whose pathological reaction to water triggers his sexual psychopathy. Hitchcock wanted the narrative built around his relationship with three women, each ending in a "crescendo".
