Re:Scottish Terrier Stud Dog
Ad:Answer #1) You should take Rufus to a dog park and help get the dog seilacizod with other dogs. If the only time Rufus has seen other dogs is while "protecting their property", then the dog will always view other dogs as "intruders". Visiting a neutral property like the dog park should help this. You may have to intervene in a scuffle and scold Rufus if a fight starts you may discover that Rufus needs to be taught that other dogs are ok.Answer #2) You should use & withhold treats as a mechanism for teaching Rufus to do tricks. You have to be VERY careful and not give up and just give the dog the treat that means they won and didn't have to learn! If you get out the bag of treats, hold one in your hand and issue the command along with a hand gesture (index finger pointing up is a good one for sit). Then push the dog's behind down until it's on the ground. When that happens, give the dog the treat.Repeat this 3-4 times and then put the treats away. Do this "lesson" once or twice a day for a day or so and the dog should start getting the idea that they will get the treat faster if THEY sit. After Rufus has successfully sit on their own a couple of times, you should change slightly and give the command and hand signal and expect the dog to sit on their own (don't give the treat until they do it themselves, and don't push down on the dog's hindquarters).Only give the treat when they succeed. If they do NOT succeed, and don't sit, do NOT give them the treat. If you're done with the lesson (or have run out of patience), put the treat back in the bag. It's also good to tell your grandparents to avoid giving the dog too many treats. In order for the dog treats to be effective, they have to be "treasured" by the dog!References : Long-time dog owner.
