He wrote pieces called things like Flabby Preludes (For a Dog) and Dried Up Embryos; he amassed hundreds of umbrellas in his small flat; was a precursor of modernism, striving to create a simpler, ‘whiter’, less form-bound kind of music; he’d had just a single six-month love affair in his whole life, with an artist called Suzanne Valadon. The unsent letters of the documentary’s title were, poignantly, all addressed to her.
