Country of Origin:
Great Britain - Developed in the 1570s as the original ratting terrier. Descendant of British Black and Tan Terrier, famous for its prowess as a working Terrier keeping vermin under control and as a fierce combatant in the rat pit. Nearly became extinct when Britain outlawed blood sports and ear cropping. A man named Handly from Manchester began breeding the Black & Tan increasing its numbers and improving its looks until the breed name was changed to Manchester Terrier in appreciation of his efforts.
Character:
This dog is high-spirited, intelligent and cunning. It only barks in times of danger.
Temperment:
They get along well with children, but may try to dominate other dogs. This breed needs to get used to cats and other household pets at a young age.They make excellent watchdogs.
Coat:
Usually black and tan. It is short, sleek, and shiny.
Care
Dead and loose hairs should be removed with a rubber brush. Ears need to be kept clean, and claws must be kept short.
