Country of Origin:
Portugal - Believed to have arrived on the Iberian Peninsula with the Moors via northern Africa. Known as Cao D'Augo in Portugal. It is a strong water dog, that worked at retriving fish, gear and even acted as rescue dogs and delivered messages between boats and shore. Brought to the US in the late 1960's where its numbers have now surpassed those in its native country.
Character:
The Portuguese Water Dog is obedient, sociable, high-spirited, and friendly.
Temperment:
This dog enjoys the companionship of dogs, other animals and children.
Coat:
Dense, curly, wavy. Most common colors are black, brown, white, black and white, or brown and white.
Care
Regular grooming with a brush and comb is required. The curly-coated variety is generally closely clipped only at the tail, in much the same manner as a working retriever. The wavy-coated variety is generally closely clipped at the hindquarters and nose.
