The munificence of their benefactor has meant that the collection is wonderfully rich – but there’s not enough money to spend on its display. Upstairs the house is looking tired and needs a new carpet and a fresh coat of paint. But none the less, seeing some of the best of Gainsborough’s work hanging in his own house is a real treat and the ground floor looks as it would have done in the 18th century, with its oak panelling and graceful rooms with antique furniture of the period.
