I could take photographs of things that were meaningful to me – Grandma and Auntie Alice standing side by side, Cindy our fluffy mongrel sitting on the lawn, and the “swing bridge” over the River Wharfe. Out of eight attempts I could usually bank on four or five decent photographs. They were only small – about 2in by 3in (we hadn’t gone metric then) – and they’d be stuck in an album with rough grey pages and identified in a spidery script with my school fountain pen. The negatives would be kept in their cellophane wallets in case I needed more prints. I never did.
