Yes, it was the early 90s, and I was on route to my first Conservative Party Conference. The conference manual was already well thumbed on the journey, when (a bit like, as a child, going through the Christmas Radio Times with your siblings and arguing over which films to watch and which would have to be missed) we debated in the car which fringe meetings should take priority over the main conference hall sessions. I must confess that I have been to Party Conference every year since (albeit, sometimes briefly). With the Conservative Party Conference coming up this weekend, what exactly are the party conferences for? And who attends these gatherings?
