A sturdy breed with a low incidence of hereditary problems. Some cases of hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, juvenile cataracts but these are uncommon. It is important that when contacting a Afghan Hound breeder that you express health concern issues and ask the breeder what they are doing in order to help mimimize them.
Please don't purchase your Afghan Hound from a petstore which commonly are known to support Afghan Hound puppy mills. Doing so only promotes inproper breeding ethics and promotes current Afghan Hound health issues. The AKC, UKC, CKC, FCI, SKC, WWKC, FIC registries recognize the Afghan Hound breed standard.

Country of Origin:
Some believe this breed originated as far back as 3500 BC. Used throughout the centuries as hunting dogs as well as guard dogs for livestock.
Brought to England about 1925 and introduced to the United States a few years later.
Character:
A calm dog when indoors, but quick and lively outside.
Temperment:
Males exhibit strong dominance behavior towards other males. Tolerant of children if not pestered by them.
Coat:
Consists of long and flowing fine hair.
Care
Should receive a complete grooming of two hours twice or more per week. Ears should be checked and cleaned regularly.
Colour:
Any color and/or combination, although white on its head is considered undesirable
