Country of Origin:
Origion is Akita prefecture in northern Japan, developed about 300 years ago as fighting dogs, as well as for hunting deer and boar. Now used as police and guard dogs.
Character:
Good hunting and watch dogs. Very quiet.
Temperment:
Prefer not to have any other dogs around, and must become used to other pets as a puppy. They can get along with children, as long as they are left alone. Not friendly with strangers.
Coat:
Straight and coarse hair with a soft and dense undercoat. Allowed colors for breed are white, red and streaked.
Care
Groom with a metal-toothed comb when the dog sheds (twice per year).
