Country of Origin:
Originated as a fighting dog in the early nineteenth century. Sometimes also referred to as a Yankee Terrier, American Bull Terrier or Half and Half. It was the first breed registered by the United Kennel Club in 1898. Modern breeding has been geared towards instilling a more gentle temperament.
Character:
Tough, loyal and tenacious. Good watch dog. Will often try to dominate other dogs.
Temperment:
Proper socialization is essential. With consistent and persistent training, can get along with other dogs and pets. Not usually recommended for a family with young children. Can be eager to fight other dogs.
Coat:
Short and shiny. Any color is acceptable, however red and beige with highlights, either with or without white highlights, is preferred. Less favored are black and tan, liver, or any color combination that is more than 80 percent white.
Care
Occassionally use a rubber brush to remove dead hairs.
