Country of Origin:
Recognized by the AKC in 1936 as the Staffordshire Terrier so as not to confuse it with the Bull Terrier. Breed developed from the Stafford Bull Terrier, which came from the cross of Bulldogs with Terriers. Name changed again in 1974 to American Staffordshire Terrier.
Character:
Tough, loyal and tenacious. Good watch dog. Will often try to dominate other dogs.
Temperment:
Proper socialization is essential. With consistent and persistent training, can get along with other dogs and pets. Not usually recommended for a family with young children. Can be eager to fight other dogs.
Coat:
The coat is short and glossy. Any color is acceptable, however red and beige with highlights, either with or without white highlights, is preferred. Less favored are black and tan, liver, or any color combination that is more than 80 percent white.
Care
Occassionally use a rubber brush to remove dead hairs.
