The Chinese Shar-Pei is susceptible to skin and eyelid problems. It is important that when contacting a Chinese Shar-pei breeder that you express health concern issues and ask the breeder what they are doing in order to help mimimize them.

Please don't purchase your Chinese Shar-pei from a petstore which commonly are known to support Chinese Shar-pei puppy mills. Doing so only promotes inproper breeding ethics and promotes current Chinese Shar-pei health issues. The AKC, CSPA, UKS, FCI, CKC, SKC, WWKC registries recognize the Chinese Shar-pei breed standard.

Country of Origin: China - Tomb statues during Han Dynasty 210 BC appear to indicate ancestoral evidence of Shar-Pei. Once used for hunting boar, wild animals, and fighting. Eventually almost extinct after Mao Tse-Tung banned dogs in China in the late 1940's. Revived by breeder Matgo Law in Hong Kong in the late 1960's, then brought to the US in early 70's when the breed numbers increased rapidly. Originally called the Chinese Fighting Dog. Accepted as a breed by AKC in 1994.

Character: This dog is brave, loyal, dominant and not always the most obedient.

Temperment: The Shar-Pei bonds quickly with its family, but is not unfriendly toward strangers. It is fine with children and gets along with other household pets, provided socialization has taken place at a young age. It sometimes fights with other dogs.

Coat: There are two varieties. Both have very hard coats. The horsecoat variety's coat is short and bristly. The brushcoat variety has longer hair. The brushcoat is considered inferior to the horsecoat variety.

Care The characteristic folds of skin that cover its entire body must be checked and cleaned regularly. The coat must be groomed with a soft brush.

Colour: Fawn (most common), black, red, apricot, cream, blue, sable, cream dilute, apricot dilute, 5-pt red (dilute points)

Comments: Indoor dogs. Develops firm attachment to its owners, Dislikes getting wet. Fragile skin tears easily, heals quickly. Average lifespan only 7 years primarily due to hereditary defects and immune deficiencies; therefore, high maintenance dog. Do quickly, but resent aggressive methods. Make good therapy dogs. Prefer human company to other dogs. Enjoy walks but only require moderate exercise. Sensitive; do best with positive reinforcement. Quick growth, heavy for size.
