Tibetan Terriers are prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy and cataracts and are also extra susceptible to fleas. It is important that when contacting a Tibetan Terrier breeder that you express health concern issues and ask the breeder what they are doing in order to help mimimize them.

Country of Origin: Tibet (China) - Just as the Tibetan Spaniel is not a spaniel, the Tibetan Terrier is not a terrier. This ancient dog is a true herding dog, probably working in tandom with Tibetan Mastiff (flock guard), while the TS herded. Said to have originated in the Lost Valley of Tibet. Regarded as a holy dog by the lamas - symbol of good luck. Never sold, only given as gifts. Recognized in England since 1937 and imported into the US in 1956. Accepted into AKC in 1973.

Character: This dog is brave, intelligent, noble, and loyal to its handler. It is cautious around strangers and dislikes being left alone.

Temperment: Provided proper socialization has taken place, this breed gets along fine with other household pets. It is good with children, provided they know when to leave it alone. It may try to dominate other dogs.

Coat: This breed has a long, luxurious, fine topcoat that is either straight or wavy. The undercoat is wooly and dense.

Care Daily grooming with a brush is required to prevent tangles and remove loose hair. Regular baths are recommended. Excessive hair around the pads of the feet must be trimmed and the ears must be kept clean.

Colour: White, grey, black, golden; all with/without white or tan markings

Comments: Makes a merry household pet, small enough for apartments, and rowdy enough for children. Learn quickly but are easily distracted and resist training. Protective, sensitive to emotional state of their people. Has unusual feet that allow it to travel .
